Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

We have all heard the old adage, “the only constant is change.”  Despite this truism, many people avoid change at all costs.  The fear of change is rooted in just that, fear.  Is fear of judgment, fear of failure, fear of the unknown, or fear of discomfort holding you back from reaching for your goals?  If you want to grow, develop, and yes, change, understanding this fear in ourselves and others is key.

When is the last time you did something that scared you?  Stretched yourself?  Got a little uncomfortable?

For me, it was starting my own business.  Telling family and colleagues that I created a leadership and consulting company terrified me.  What would they think?  When I posted it on social media, what judgmental comments were headed my way?  Would people think I wasn’t capable or I was silly for trying this after many years of advancing in healthcare leadership?  When I found the courage to tell people about my new business, instead of being shocked, people most often responded, “I can definitely see you doing that.”  My fears were so much worse than the reality.

Consider the following areas in your life: family and parenting, significant other, career and purpose, spirituality, hobbies, learning and education, finance, and health.  How can you grow, develop, and get a little uncomfortable in these areas of your life?

These simple steps can help you push past the fear of being uncomfortable and make meaningful changes in your life:

1.      Define your goal.

2.      What is the worst thing that could happen if you tried to reach your goal?

3.      Why do you want to achieve this goal?

4.      Identify who will support you in achieving your goal.

5.      What action step can you take today to move towards your goal?
